The Kratky Method is the ultimate expression of hydroponic minimalism. Developed by University of Hawaii horticulturist Dr. B.A. Kratky, this method challenges the assumption that hydroponics requires moving water or air pumps.
It is a passive, non-circulating system. In a standard DWC setup, an air stone forces oxygen into the water. In the Kratky method, there is no air stone. Instead, the plant creates its own oxygen environment.
You fill a reservoir with nutrient solution once at the beginning of the grow. As the plant drinks, the water level drops. This declining water level creates an expanding "Air Gap" between the net pot and the liquid. The roots that hang in this humid air gap transform into specialized "Oxygen Roots," allowing the plant to breathe, while the root tips remain submerged to drink. It is silent, electricity-free, and surprisingly effective for shorter lifecycles.

1. The Air Gap (The Lung)
This is the core concept. When you start, the water touches the bottom of the net pot. As the plant grows, it consumes water, lowering the level. The plant instinctively realizes the water is receding and develops fuzzy, white "air roots" in the exposed space.
The Rule: You must never re-fill the reservoir to the top. If you submerge these air roots after they have adapted to oxygen, the plant will drown and die instantly.
2. The Stagnant Reservoir
Unlike DWC, the water does not move. Critics argue this breeds root rot. However, because the plant is absorbing oxygen from the air gap (not the water), the dissolved oxygen level in the liquid is less critical. As long as the reservoir is light-proof and temperatures are kept reasonable, the roots will thrive.
3. The "One-Fill" Ideal
In a perfect Kratky setup (like for lettuce), you calculate the exact amount of water the plant needs for its entire life, fill the tank once, and harvest when it's empty. For cannabis (a thirsty plant), this usually requires a very large tank or careful refilling.

Phase 1: The Setup (The Fill)
Fill your reservoir with nutrient solution until it just barely touches the bottom of your net pot. The moisture will wick up to the seedling.
Phase 2: The Drop
Do nothing. Watch the plant grow. As it stretches, the water level will drop 1 inch, then 5 inches, then 10 inches. The roots will follow the water down, leaving a massive root mass hanging in the air.
Phase 3: The Refill (The Danger Zone)
Cannabis drinks a lot. A 5-gallon bucket will likely run dry before harvest.
The Protocol: When you need to refill, never fill more than 50%.
Why: You must leave the "Air Roots" exposed. Only refill the bottom portion so the "Water Roots" can drink. If you cover the air roots, the plant suffocates.
Phase 4: The Harvest
By harvest time, the reservoir might be nearly empty, with just an inch of concentrated nutrient sludge at the bottom. This is fine. The plant has consumed what it needed.

The Kratky Method is for the Minimalist.
Is it the best way to grow monster plants? No. DWC is faster, and Coco yields more. But Kratky is the easiest way to grow a decent plant with zero infrastructure. It is the perfect method for growing an Autoflower in a corner, or for keeping "Mother Plants" alive with minimal maintenance. It proves that nature doesn't need a pump to survive.
