What is the Cannabis Flowering Stage?

The Flowering Phase is the main event. It is the biological shift where the plant stops focusing on growing leaves and stems (vegetative growth) and begins pouring 100% of its energy into reproduction (growing buds).

In nature, this happens in the fall as the days get shorter. Indoors, the grower plays God by switching the light timer from 18 hours of light to 12 hours of light / 12 hours of darkness.

This change in photoperiod triggers a hormonal cascade within the plant. It is an irreversible switch. Once a plant is deep in flower, trying to force it back to vegetative growth (Re-Vegging) causes massive stress. This phase requires strict environmental discipline—specifically, the absolute sanctity of the dark period.


⚙️ The Mechanics: The Hormonal Switch

1. The Phytochrome Trigger

Cannabis plants "count" the hours of darkness using a pigment called Phytochrome.

  • The Rule: It is not the 12 hours of light that matters; it is the 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness.

  • The Danger: Even a single flash of light (a cell phone screen, a power strip LED) during the dark period can confuse the plant, causing it to "hermaphrodite" (grow pollen sacs) and seed your entire crop. Light leaks are fatal.

2. The Stretch (Weeks 1–3)

Before it builds buds, the plant undergoes a final explosive growth spurt called "The Stretch."

  • The Mechanics: The plant is racing to get above competing vegetation to spread its pollen.

  • Scale: Most strains will double in height. Some Sativas (like Sour Diesel) can triple.

  • Grower Tip: If you flip to flower when your tent is already full, "The Stretch" will push your plants into the grow lights, burning them.

3. The Nutrient Shift (P-K Spike)

The plant's metabolic needs flip upside down.

  • Nitrogen (N): Demand drops. High nitrogen in flower results in leafy, airy buds.

  • Phosphorus (P) & Potassium (K): Demand skyrockets. These are the building blocks of flowers and resin. This is why growers switch to "Bloom" nutrients or "P-K Boosters."


🛠️ The Environmental Targets (The Cool Down)

To mimic Autumn, you should generally lower temperatures and humidity as flowering progresses.

  • Temperature: 75°F – 78°F (Day) / 65°F – 70°F (Night). A differential between day and night temps helps bring out purple colors (anthocyanins).

  • Humidity (RH):

    • Weeks 1–3: 60%

    • Weeks 4–6: 50%

    • Weeks 7–9: 40–45% (Critical to prevent Mold/Rot).

  • CO2: If supplementing, run CO2 high (1000–1200 ppm) during the first 6 weeks, then taper off.

Stage 1: Transition & Stretch (Weeks 1–3)

  • Visuals: Rapid vertical growth. White pistils (hairs) appear at the nodes ("crowning").

  • Action: Continue feeding Vegetative nutrients (Nitrogen) for the first 10 days to fuel the stretch, then switch to Bloom nutrients.

  • Training: Keep tucking branches under your trellis net. This is your last chance to shape the plant.

Stage 2: Bulking & Stacking (Weeks 4–6)

  • Visuals: Vertical growth stops. Buds start to swell and connect ("stacking"). Trichomes (crystals) begin to appear.

  • Action: This is the peak feeding window. Introduce your P-K Booster (e.g., PK 13/14). Push the EC (nutrient strength) to the maximum the plant can handle without burning.

  • Defoliation: Perform a heavy defoliation (Day 42) to expose lower bud sites to light.

Stage 3: Ripening & The Fade (Weeks 7–9+)

  • Visuals: Pistils turn orange/brown and curl in. Buds become hard. Leaves may turn yellow/purple ("The Fade").

  • Action: Stop P-K boosters. Reduce overall nutrient strength.

  • The Flush: In the final 1–2 weeks, many growers switch to plain water to use up stored nutrients.
