What is a SIP or Earthbox?

Sub-Irrigated Planters (SIPs)—often recognized by brand names like Earthbox or City Picker—are the secret weapon of the "lazy" organic gardener. They fundamentally change the physics of watering.

In a traditional pot, you pour water from the top (Top Watering). Gravity pulls the water down, often creating dry spots (hydrophobic pockets) or over-saturated mud at the bottom. It is a feast-or-famine cycle for the roots.

In a SIP, there is a water reservoir at the very bottom of the container, separated from the soil by an aeration screen. The soil is connected to the water via "wicking corners" or a central soil leg. Through the physics of capillary action, the soil naturally pulls water up from the reservoir exactly as fast as the plant drinks it. This creates a perfect, constant moisture level throughout the pot, allowing microbes to thrive and plants to drink on autopilot.

1. Capillary Action (The Wick)

Think of a paper towel dipped in water. The water climbs up the towel against gravity. Peat-based soil acts the same way. As the top soil dries out due to evaporation and plant drinking, it naturally pulls moisture up from the reservoir below to replace it. This ensures the plant is never thirsty, but also never drowning.

2. The Air Gap

Crucially, there is an air gap between the top of the water level and the bottom of the soil screen (except for the wicking legs). This prevents the roots from rotting. The roots eventually grow through the screen and hang into the air gap, absorbing high levels of oxygen similar to a passive hydroponic system.

3. The Mulch Cover (The Vapor Dome)

Most SIPs come with a plastic "shower cap" or mulch cover that goes over the soil surface. This seals in moisture, preventing evaporation from the top. This forces the water to travel through the plant to escape, maximizing transpiration and growth. It also allows feeder roots to grow right on the soil surface to eat top-dressed nutrients.

The Commercial Option (Earthbox):

  • The Box: A sturdy plastic tote with a fill tube and an overflow drain.

  • The Screen: A grate that separates water from soil.

  • The Fill Tube: You pour water down a tube directly into the bottom reservoir. You never water the top soil.

The DIY Option (The "Tote SIP"):

  • You can build one using two plastic storage totes stacked inside each other. The bottom tote holds water; the top tote holds soil (with holes drilled for wicking).

The Medium (Critical):

  • Peat Moss Base: The medium must wick. Peat moss is the best wicker. Coco coir works too. Heavy sand or clay soils will not work in a SIP; they are too heavy to pull water up.

Phase 1: The Build

  1. Pack the "wicking corners" tight with moist soil.

  2. Fill the box with your soil mix.

  3. The Fertilizer Strip: In organic SIPs, you bury a thick line of dry organic fertilizer (like Build-A-Soil Craft Blend) across the top of the soil.

  4. Install the plastic mulch cover.

Phase 2: The Establishment

When you first plant a seedling, the roots are too short to tap into the wicking moisture. You must top-water the seedling gently (just a cup) for the first 10 days until it establishes.

Phase 3: The Reservoir Routine

Once the plant is established:

  • Daily: Check the water level down the fill tube.

  • Refill: Pour water down the tube until it flows out the overflow drain. You cannot overwater. The overflow valve prevents the water level from touching the soil screen.

Phase 4: The Recharge

Since you aren't pouring nutrients into the water (usually just plain water goes in the reservoir), the plant relies on the soil nutrition. Mid-flower, you may need to lift the plastic cover and add another "strip" of dry amendments (Top Dressing) for the surface roots to consume.

They are arguably the best way to grow organic "Living Soil" in a small container. Living soil usually needs 15+ gallons to stay moist and alive; a SIP can achieve the same microbial health in 7 gallons because the moisture is perfectly constant. It is the ideal method for growers who travel frequently or have busy schedules.
