Nutrients are the building blocks of plant life, but they are useless without the correct pH.
Think of nutrients like food on a buffet table, and pH (Potential of Hydrogen) as the "ticket" required to eat. If the pH is too high (alkaline) or too low (acidic), the plant is chemically barred from absorbing specific minerals—even if they are sitting right there in the soil. This is called Nutrient Lockout.
Cannabis is a "heavy feeder," meaning it requires significant amounts of Macronutrients (N-P-K) and Micronutrients (Ca, Mg, Fe, etc.). However, more is not always better. The most common mistake new growers make is "loving their plants to death" by overfeeding, leading to nutrient burn.
⚙️ The Mechanics: The Big Three (N-P-K)
Every fertilizer bottle has three numbers on the front (e.g., 4-4-4). These represent the percentage by weight of:
1. Nitrogen (N) – The Engine
Role: Essential for vegetative growth, stem structure, and chlorophyll production (green leaves).
Timing: High demand in Veg, Low demand in Flower.
Deficiency: Lower leaves turn yellow and fall off.
Toxicity: Leaves turn dark green and "claw" (curl down).
2. Phosphorus (P) – The Power
Role: Essential for root development and flower formation. It transfers energy (ATP) throughout the plant.
Timing: Moderate in Veg, Critical High in Flower.
Deficiency: Purple stems, slow growth, dark blue/green leaves with brown spots.
3. Potassium (K) – The Regulator
Role: Controls water uptake, stomata opening, and enzyme activation. It makes buds heavy and dense.
Timing: Consistent demand, peaking in Late Flower.
Deficiency: Edges of leaves turn brown and crispy ("burnt toast").

You cannot mix these philosophies easily. Choose one.
Path A: Synthetic (Salt-Based)
Examples: General Hydroponics, Athena, Canna.
How it works: The nutrients are "chelated" (ready to eat immediately). You pour them in, the plant eats instantly.
Pros: Fast growth, total control, easy to flush.
Cons: Easy to burn plants; kills beneficial microbes; flavor can be harsh if not flushed.
pH Rule: You must adjust the pH of your water bottle before feeding.
Path B: Organic (Amended Soil)
Examples: Gaia Green, Down to Earth, Build-A-Soil.
How it works: You feed the soil, not the plant. Microbes break down dry amendments (kelp, bone meal) over time, making them available to the plant.
Pros: Better flavor/smell, harder to burn plants, no pH pen needed (usually).
Cons: Slow to correct deficiencies (takes 1-2 weeks); "muddy" growth if cold.
pH Rule: The soil buffers the pH for you.
⚖️ The pH Sweet Spot
If your pH is off, nothing else matters.

The Drift: Do not aim for a perfect "6.0" every time. It is better to "drift" (e.g., water at 5.8 today, 6.2 tomorrow) to ensure all nutrients are absorbed, as different minerals absorb best at different pH levels.

Phase 1: The Feed (EC/PPM)
If using synthetics, you need an EC Meter (Electrical Conductivity). It measures the salt concentration.
Seedling: EC 0.4 – 0.8
Veg: EC 1.2 – 1.6
Flower: EC 1.8 – 2.4
Phase 2: The Cal-Mag Tax
Cannabis—especially under LED lights—eats massive amounts of Calcium and Magnesium.
Symptom: Rusty brown spots on leaves (Calcium) or yellowing between veins (Magnesium).
The Fix: Add a Cal-Mag supplement to every watering in Coco/Hydro, or top dress Dolomite Lime in Organic Soil.
Phase 3: The Flush (Emergency)
If you overfed and the leaf tips are burnt/crispy:
Stop Feeding.
Flush the pot with 3x the pot volume of pH-balanced plain water.
Check the "Runoff EC." If the water coming out the bottom is extremely high (e.g., 3.0+), keep flushing until it drops.

Nutrients are a Supplement, not a Fuel.
Light is the fuel. Nutrients are just the vitamins. Adding more nutrients than the light can process will not make the plant grow faster; it will poison it.
The Golden Rule: Always start at 50% of the manufacturer's recommended dose. Most bottle labels are written to sell more fertilizer, not to grow the best weed. It is easy to add more later; it is impossible to take it out.
