Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) is the system you most likely picture when you imagine a "futuristic hydroponic lab." It consists of long, white, rectangular tubes with plants evenly spaced along the top.

The concept is elegant in its minimalism. Unlike Deep Water Culture (where roots are submerged) or Ebb and Flow (where they are flooded), NFT relies on a constant, shallow stream of nutrient solution—literally a "film" of water—that flows over the bottom of the roots.

Gravity does the work. The channels are set at a slight angle. Water is pumped to the high end, flows down over the roots, and drains back into the reservoir. Because the roots are never fully submerged, the upper portion of the root mass is permanently exposed to the air, granting them 100% access to oxygen while simultaneously drinking water.

The Cannabis Caveat: While NFT is the global standard for lettuce and herbs, cannabis roots are aggressive. They can grow so large that they clog the channels. Therefore, NFT for cannabis is strictly reserved for smaller plants (Sea of Green) or short vegetative cycles.

1. The Channel & The Slope

The plants sit in "net pots" (usually with just a tiny amount of clay pebbles or a starter plug) inserted into the top of a PVC channel or specialized NFT tray. The channel is tilted at a specific ratio (typically 1:30 to 1:40) to ensure the water flows fast enough to stay oxygenated but slow enough to be absorbed.

2. The Film (Laminar Flow)

The goal is "Laminar Flow"—smooth, non-turbulent water. The depth of the water should only be 1–3 mm. This shallow depth ensures that the bottom roots are feeding while the top roots are breathing. If the water is too deep, it becomes just a bad version of DWC without air stones.

3. The Recirculation

Like Ebb and Flow, this is a closed loop. The water returns to the tank, is re-oxygenated by the fall into the reservoir, and is pumped back up. This makes NFT incredibly water and nutrient efficient.

The Hardware:

  • Channels: Specialized flat-bottomed NFT channels are best. Round PVC pipes are common for DIYers, but the curved bottom bunches the roots together, leading to rot. Flat bottoms allow roots to spread like a mat.

  • The Pump: A submersible pump designed for continuous duty. It never turns off.

  • The Reservoir: Standard hydroponic tank.

The Medium:

  • None (mostly): The plant starts in a Rockwool cube or a Rapid Rooter, which is placed directly into the channel. No clay pebbles are needed to fill the tube. This saves massive amounts of money and cleanup time.

Phase 2: Root Management

For cannabis, you must monitor the "Root Mat."

Because NFT has zero buffer (no wet soil to save you), a power outage is fatal. Serious NFT growers usually have a battery backup (UPS) on their water pump to keep the flow going during blackouts.

Phase 4: Temperature Control

Because the water is spread out in a thin film inside the tubes, it is highly susceptible to the ambient room temperature. If your lights make the room hot, the water gets hot instantly. A Water Chiller is almost mandatory for NFT cannabis.

NFT is for the Efficiency Expert.

It is sleek, clean, and professional. It eliminates the mess of soil and the cost of media. However, it is fundamentally a system designed for leafy greens, forced to adapt to cannabis. It works beautifully for Sea of Green (SOG) clones that are flowered immediately, but if you try to grow 6-foot monsters in an NFT tube, you are asking for a clogged disaster.
