The Harvest is the moment of truth. After months of labor, many growers ruin their crop in the final 48 hours by harvesting too early (out of impatience) or too late (out of negligence).
The most common mistake beginners make is looking at the Pistils (the hairs). While orange hairs indicate the plant is aging, they do not definitively indicate ripeness.
The only scientifically accurate way to determine peak THC levels is to examine the Trichomes (the resin glands) under magnification. Harvesting is not an exact date on a calendar; it is a bio-chemical window of opportunity that stays open for roughly 5–7 days. Miss it, and THC degrades into CBN (a sleep-inducing, non-psychoactive cannabinoid).

You need a Jeweler's Loupe (30x-60x) or a Digital Microscope. Look at the crystals on the calyxes (the buds themselves), not the sugar leaves (which mature faster).
1. Clear Trichomes (Under-Ripe)
Appearance: Glassy, transparent, like water droplets.
Chemistry: The cannabinoids are not fully formed. Potency is low.
Verdict: DO NOT HARVEST. The high will be weak and anxiety-inducing ("racy").
2. Cloudy / Milky Trichomes (Peak Potency)
Appearance: Opaque, plastic-white, like milk.
Chemistry: THC levels are at their absolute maximum.
Verdict: HARVEST WINDOW OPEN. This produces the most euphoric, psychoactive, and energetic high.
3. Amber Trichomes (Over-Ripe)
Appearance: Gold, reddish-brown, or amber.
Chemistry: THC has begun oxidizing into CBN (Cannabinol).
Verdict: SEDATIVE EFFECTS. A harvest with 30%+ amber trichomes will produce "Couch-Lock" weed that puts you to sleep.

Step 1: The Flush (Week 8–9)
Stop feeding nutrients. Water with plain, pH-balanced water.
Goal: Force the plant to use up its internal reserves. The leaves should turn yellow/purple ("The Fade"). Green leaves at harvest mean the plant is still full of nitrogen (harsh smoke).
Step 2: The Dark Period (Optional)
Some growers leave the plants in total darkness for 24–48 hours before the chop.
Theory: Terpenes are volatile and evaporate in light/heat. Darkness preserves them, and the stress may force a final push of resin.
Step 3: The Chop
Cut the plant. You have two choices:

Option A: Wet Trim (The Commercial Way)
You trim the fan leaves and sugar leaves immediately after chopping, while the plant is wet.
Pros: Much easier (leaves stick out stiffly). Reduces risk of mold in high-humidity climates. Buds look "manicured" immediately.
Cons: The plant dries too fast (3–4 days). This traps chlorophyll, leading to the dreaded "Hay Smell" (grassy taste).
Best For: Humid environments or commercial crews needing speed.
Option B: Dry Trim (The Connoisseur Way)
You hang the plant with all the leaves still attached. You trim after the drying process (10–14 days later).
Pros: The leaves act as a humidity buffer, slowing down the drying process. This allows chlorophyll to break down naturally. Preserves maximum terpenes.
Cons: Trimming dry weed is difficult; leaves curl in and are sticky. It takes longer.
Best For: Top-shelf quality and dry climates (Desert/Winter).

Unless you live in a tropical swamp where mold is guaranteed, you should always Dry Trim. The difference in flavor is undeniable.
The Rule: Do not harvest based on the seed packet says ("8 Weeks"). Harvest when the trichomes say so. If the packet says 8 weeks, plan for 9 or 10.
