Strain Review: Super Silver Haze
Seed Review: Super Silver Haze
Genetics: Skunk #1 x Northern Lights x Haze Breeder: Green House Seed Co. / Mr. Nice Seedbank (Shantibaba/Neville) Type: 70% Sativa / 30% Indica Flowering Time: 10–11 Weeks Difficulty: High (Requires patience, height management, and precise feeding) Yield Potential: Very High (600g–800g/m²)
🏗️ The Executive Summary
Super Silver Haze (SSH) is the "King of Sativas." In the late 90s, this strain did the impossible: it won the High Times Cannabis Cup three years in a row (1997, 1998, 1999). It is widely considered one of the greatest breeding achievements of the 20th century.
The genius of SSH lies in its "Holy Trinity" parentage. The breeders took the unmanageable, long-flowering pure Haze and tamed it with the structure of Skunk #1 and the resin/potency of Northern Lights. The result is a plant that grows tall and yields like a Sativa, but produces buds that are dense and coated in a silvery-white resin usually only seen on Indicas.
Why Grow It? You grow SSH for the High. It produces a unique, energetic, and long-lasting cerebral effect that modern poly-hybrids often lack. However, it is a commitment—it requires a long flowering period and expert canopy management.
🚜 The Grow Journal
Setup:
Environment: 5x5 Gorilla Grow Tent (Height Extension Mandatory).
Lighting: 650W High-Efficiency LED (Dimmable).
Medium: 10 Gallon Smart Pots (Coco Coir/Perlite Mix).
Count: 4 Plants.
Training: Aggressive SCROG (Screen of Green) + Lollipopping.
🌱 The Vegetative Phase (Weeks 1–4)
Week 1 (Vigor): SSH is vigorous but lanky. Seedlings stretch immediately. We keep the light close to prevent them from becoming string beans.
Week 2 (Structure): The Haze influence is dominant. Long internodal spacing, thin serrated leaves, and flexible stems.
Week 3 (Training): We top early (Node 4). We also perform "Super Cropping" (pinching and bending stems) to strengthen the branches. SSH handles high stress well.
Week 4 (The Flip): CRITICAL DECISION. We flip to 12/12 early (Day 25–28). The plants look small (18 inches), but we know the Sativa stretch is coming. We install the first trellis net now.
🌸 The Flowering Phase (Weeks 1–11)
Week 1 (The Explosion): The plants explode. They grow 2–3 inches per day. We weave branches horizontally through the net aggressively.
Week 2 (The Jungle): The canopy is filling fast. We raise the lights to the top of the tent.
Week 3 (Bud Sites): Pistils emerge. The plant looks "wild" compared to a tidy Indica. We strip the bottom 40% of the plant (Lollipopping) because light will never reach the floor.
Week 4 (Feeding): SSH is finicky. It wants high Nitrogen longer than most strains, but it burns easily if EC is too high. We keep EC moderate (1.8–2.0) and watch the tips.
Week 5 (The Silver): The resin production begins. The trichomes are small but incredibly numerous, giving the leaves a metallic, silvery sheen.
Week 6 (The Wait): This is the mental hurdle. Most strains are swelling now; SSH is just getting started. It looks lanky and unfinished. Patience is required.
Week 7 (Foxtailing): The buds begin to stack in spirals (foxtails). This is genetic, not heat stress. The smell is classic Amsterdam: spicy, herbal, and citrus.
Week 8 (Second Wind): Just when you think it's done growing, it pushes out a second wave of white pistils. Do not chop yet.
Week 9 (Bulk): Finally, the colas fill in. They are long spears. We use bamboo stakes to support the leaning towers.
Week 10 (Ripening): The smell becomes pungent—hazy and piney.
Week 11 (Harvest): We wait for the trichomes to go cloudy. We rarely wait for amber on SSH, as we want to preserve the energetic Sativa effects. We chop at day 75–77.
⚖️ The Harvest Report
Wet Weight: The plants are massive trees. The trim bin fills up with high-quality sugar trim (excellent for bubble hash).
Dry Weight: The 4 plants yielded 2.1 lbs (approx 950g).
Bag Appeal: It has a "Vintage" look. The buds are lighter green, slightly looser than a Cookie strain, but covered in a blizzard of trichomes. The silver shine is real.
🏁 The Architect's Verdict
Super Silver Haze is the Marathon Runner.
It is not a sprint; it is an endurance test for the grower. It demands vertical space and patience. But the reward is a harvest of "Old School" connoisseur smoke that cuts through the fog of modern Indicas. It is the perfect strain for the morning smoker.
Score: 9.4/10 (Effect + Yield) Best For: Sativa lovers, growers with high ceilings, and those chasing the "Amsterdam Coffee Shop" vibe.
